Daily life therapies
All of us need therapies. Life is full of stress provoking situations. Human beings are prone to stress from various sources, the most common being education, work, interpersonal relationships, work relationships and financial troubles.
Most often we end up doing the following in trying to deal with the stress.
These are actually the DON’TS
- Don’t raid the refrigerator , you will only gain weight
- Don’t watch the television, it will further mess up your mind
- Don’t go to social media sites; they can make you suicidal!
- Don’t search the Google, it will only scare you further
- Don’t brood…this is tough one…but one must practice to keep the mind on things other than the stressors
- Don’t call others to complain… though this helps in the short term, in the long run, it can complicate things
Often we are advised to deal with stress, unhappiness and anxiety in ways that are difficult to practice. Some of the most important advice we get are doing yoga, meditation, counselling sessions, physical exercises, praanayaama and so on. Many among us do not find these things easy to do. I have put here random activities that can be of great help in place of the above activities. While those are very necessary, before one gets into the grove of doing them on a regular basis, the following can be done with much ease. This is a random list, you can choose what suits your situation. Try them
- Play with an infant
- Watch elderly persons in social interaction
- Stare at the sky in the evenings when birds fly home
- Dress up
- Listen to your favourite song
- Re read your favourite book
- Munch a small piece of your favourite snack
- Cook a nice meal
- Scrub the bathroom
- Call up a long forgotten school mate and chat
- Pick up a left out activity; singing, embroidery , playing a game etc
- Have a bath…long one
- Sing loudly anything you like
- Dance any which way you can
- Talk to yourself…aloud
- Write something…your thoughts, a story…poem…whatever
- Visit an old age home and chat with inmates
- Volunteer to tell stories, teach rhymes, teach art work in a pre school
- Dust and clean your house
- Stay silent for sometime every day
- Switch off all electronic gadgets for a couple of hours every day
- Visit elderly relatives and spend time with them
- Visit less frequented places…those that are not famous as tourist spots
- Sit in a comfortable spot, close eyes and stay still
- Read about different places, cultures and people
- Draw, paint…even with your children’s crayons or water colours
- Just walk in your neighbourhood street, observing everything you can
- Eat natural foods without cooking them
- Listen to children
- Visit a village and walk the streets, talk to people
- Go to a historical place and listen to stories about the importance of the place
- Shop for simple things and gift them away
- Recall old film songs starting with a particular word… eg. Zindagi, Raath, Aankhen etc
- Simply flow with the waves of routine life
- Lastly, think on ‘what can be the worst that can happen?’ if you can answer this fairly, half of the stress will disappear.
Although i am not doing all what you have said, i do follow some of them and live happily…hope many more may follow what you said above…you’re really a good grand-mother!
