Can leadership be taught?
Yes, if you teach yourself and not expect to have a management guru to help you, since it is more to do with attitude and not skill development.
Having said that, it must be admitted that most people who ascend that position reach there by all kinds of means and once there are unsure how to be there effectively.
There are different kinds of leaders. I have seen a few in my life, here is a list I experienced
- Will talk emphatically and loudly, and not let anyone in
- Will hand down instructions randomly with no suggestions
- Will simply keep saying ‘I am the boss, do what I say ‘
- The ‘you are all useless and will face repercussions’ threatening type
- ‘Don’t you dare bypass me’ type
- ‘I need not do but you must do’ type
- The one who has favourites for each type of work and will assign to them repeatedly without getting to know if others can do it too
- Will keep subordinates who are good to him/her
- Will handle with kid gloves all the trouble makers and be unfair to others
- Will delegate and delegate, never realising that there are some things that the leader must do by himself/herself
- Will flee the situation at the moment of trouble
- Will make things worse by irresponsible stand in crisis situation
- Will act impulsively and blame the consequences on others who cannot defend themselves
What to do to be a good leader?
- Understand the true meaning of a leader. Read up the classical definitions, one of them says ‘must be a person others look up to.’ That’s your key
- Remember you are the boss but for leading from the front and not bossing over others
- Skill yourself; nothing beats a leader who can do things
- Polish communication skills; being a positive effective communicator is critically important
- Practice being fair; prejudices must be kept at a bay when dealing with subordinates
- Never allow someone to fill your ears with gossip, that is a dead end to being a good leader
- Listen…very important to generate ideas and cooperation
- Understand the skills, abilities and temperaments of your subordinates. Then only you can leverage diversity
- Delegate work fairly, do those that the leader must do
- Do not micro manage; trust others to know how to do things
- Respond timely to crisis situations
- Keep your emotions in control all the time; outbursts do not make a good leader
- Be a mentor to others, don’t let them to struggle to find answers and solutions
- Take responsibility for failures and share success with all members of your team
- Give appreciation where due, do not take all the credit
In effect, your absence must be sourly missed and your presence must be invigorating. That’s a good leader. Tips for being positive.
Mam, ur articles are mind blowing, letting humans think and peep inside themselves once your articles are read Mam
Thank you for giving such a nice messages.
Good analysis and recommendation. To me, L-E-A-D-E-R is a D-E-A-L-E-R of different kind of persons under him. First and foremost is, he has to remove word BOSS from his mind. EGO loves the word BOSS! A leader has many leaders under him in the making. He either makes them or shakes them of their attitudes! Many a times leadership programs by big corporates are devised to suit their business style. As rightly put by you it is the individual’s attitude and determination towards leadership which makes him a leader. He himself should define what motivates him/her and what not! If he gets a right type of mentor, his life is then made. Most of the times it is seen that organization takes the person to ‘their level of incompetence’ i. e. the peter principle.
Very Well said. I am placing this comment too along with the article so that others benefit from this insight on leadership. Thank you
